New Robotic Surgery at CaroMont Health
February 11, 2010

GASTONIA, NC, February 9, 2010 – CaroMont Health has expanded its surgical services with the addition of robotic surgical technology, known as da Vinci® surgical system. The system combines computer and robotic technologies with the skills of a surgeon to provide a level of surgical care previously unavailable.

The robot basically works to enhance the surgical procedure. It allows the surgeon to perform extremely precise and complex movements using robotic arms. Every surgical maneuver is performed with direct input from the surgeon. It also provides certain patients with an alternative to traditional surgery – with its large open incisions – and laparoscopy, which is often limited to simple procedures.

Using a three-dimensional computer view of the patient’s body, surgeons are able to manipulate instruments through small incisions. In fact, the surgeon can get closer to the surgical site than human hands and vision will allow through the 3-D images. For patients, this means the potential for significantly less pain, a shorter hospital stay, a faster return to normal activities, and better clinical outcomes.

“CaroMont Health has demonstrated an on-going commitment to minimally invasive surgical options and robotic surgery is a natural progression,” said Dr. David Huber, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. “With the addition of the da Vinci® system, we are building upon our foundation as a leading provider of surgical services in the region.”

The da Vinci® surgical system will be used initially at Gaston Memorial Hospital for urological procedures such as prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy and partial cystectomy with plans to include gynecological surgery such as hysterectomy. Dr. Ciamack Kamdar with Gaston Urological Associates is the first surgeon at Gaston Memorial to use the advanced surgical system. He received his fellowship training in Urologic Oncology with emphasis on daVinci® robotic surgery at City of Hope, Duarte, California. For more information, call 704-834-2226.
