  • Cancer P.O.W.E.R.
    The Program for Oncology Wellness with Education and Rehabilitation is for all individuals diagnosed with cancer recently or at any time. Services include an exercise and rehabilitation program, stress management, chat group, smoking cessation, nutrition information, Hospice introduction, prostate cancer support group, grief counseling and pharmacy information.     Breast Cancer Support Group (Second Monday of every month, 6pm at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Dogwood Room) A support group to meet the emotional, social, and informational needs of women touched by breast cancer.
    CSI: Cancer Support and Information (2nd Thursday monthly at 5:30 pm at Gaston Hematology & Oncology, Gastonia) For all cancer patients.
    Just for Kids & Teens (Third Thursday monthly, 5:30 pm at CaroMont Cancer Center) Education and support for children and grandchildren of cancer patients.
    Living Beyond Cancer  (Quarterly, 6pm at Gaston Memorial Hospital Dogwood Room) A support group for cancer patients, families, and caregivers including all cancer diagnoses.
    Look Good...Feel Better (first Monday of every other month at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Dogwood Room) A seminar to offer cosmetic advice for women experiencing side effects of chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Discussions include selecting wigs and head coverings, reducing complications through altered cosmetic applications, and lessening visible effects of cancer treatments. Service is co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
    Man To Man Prostate Group (Quarterly, 6pm at Gaston Memorial Hospital Dogwood Room ) An educational support program co-sponsored by American Cancer Society to provide support and information on prostate cancer to men and their spouses.
    Individual & Family Counseling (by appointment 704-834-3851) An oncology counselor assists the patient and family in coping with the emotional and social effects of the cancer experience, including the development of coping skills, improved communication, and identification of resources.
    The Cancer Hotline (phone 704-834-2932) A voice mail system records your questions and concerns. A registered nurse reviews all inquiries and promptly returns phone calls. This number also serves as the registration system for many of our support programs.
    Road to Recovery Trained volunteer drivers provide transportation for cancer patients in need of assistance for their oncology doctor appointments and chemotherapy/radiation treatment visits. Service is co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
    Reach to Recovery Trained volunteer breast cancer survivors provide emotional support, rehabilitation information, and resource materials to women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Service is co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

    Celiac (Meets monthly) Support group for individuals diagnosed with celiac disease. Contact 704-834-2252 for more information.




    Diabetes
    Education and support are the focus of the Diabetes Support Group. Members hear speakers discuss topics including diet, foot care, stress management and new medications. The group meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. at Cardiac Health and Fitness, Suite 306 in Summit Place Building in Gastonia.  No meetings are scheduled in June, July and August.     Fibromyalgia
    This condition is a musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder causing discomfort in muscles, ligaments, tendons and fibrous tissues of the body. Members share their experiences and learn effective coping skills. The group meets in the Gaston Memorial Hospital Pine Room every second Tuesday at 7 p.m., except July and December. For more information, please call 704-834-2139.


    Grief
    Hospice offers several classes on grief. These include: Bereavement, Death of a Spouse, Fresh Start Widowed of the Greater Gaston Area, and Widowed Person's Lunch Bunch. These classes are offered free for Hospice clients and at a small fee for others. For more information, call 704-861-8405.



    Multiple Sclerosis
    Meets the third Saturday of the month from 11:00 a.m. at the Remount Road building in Gastonia. The groups receive general information and the special reassurance of relating to each other's experience. For more information, call 704-834-2253.

    Pain
    This group is for persons with chronic pain. The group meets monthly. For more information, call 704-834-2253.

    Parkinson's Disease
    This group features monthly discussions of topics including medication, dietary considerations, financial options and emotional support. Parkinson's Disease affects the central nervous system, causing symptoms including excessive trembling and difficulty with balance and walking. The group meets monthly.  For more information, call 704-834-2253.

    Pulmonary Support Group
    The Pulmonary Support Group offers support and education to patients with respiratory conditions such as COPD, Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Asthma. This group is open to all patients, family, friends and caregivers of those that deal with a chronic respiratory condition. The meetings are held at The Cardiac Health and Fitness Center at 660 Summit Crossing Place, Suite 302, Gastonia. on the third Thursday of each month at noon. No meetings are held in June, July, August or December. There is no fee or registration required. For more information, call 704-671-7944.

    Stroke and Brain Injury
    Support group meets the second Tuesday of the month in the Gaston Memorial Hospital Elm Room at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the Stroke and Brain Injury Support Group is to provide emotional support and education for patients and families through the recovery process. Call 704-671-5738 for more information. Group is sponsored by CaroMont Rehab and Sports Medicine.

    Weight Loss
    Support group for graduates of FitWeigh programs. Group meets first Monday of the month at the Cardiac Health and Fitness Center. Call 704-671-7939.
