Sometimes cancer is detected due to symptoms such as a lump, a nagging cough or bowel changes. Other times it is detected through routine screening or "accidentally" when other tests or exams are being performed.

Diagnosing cancer typically involves the use of three detection methods: laboratory tests, imaging procedures or a biopsy. At Gaston Memorial Hospital, advanced radiolgical and laboratory capabilities are utilized. From nuclear medicine to highly detailed immuno-staining for histology to sentinel lymph node biopsy, cancer patients can be assured that they are receiving superior diagnostic care. We also offer a state-of-the-art positron emission technology (PET) system, which provides early and highly accurate detection of cancer.
