Medicare requires all panel components be medically necessary to justify panel order.  In cases where only certain components are medically necessary, individual components or a less inclusive panel should be ordered.  It is the position of the Office of Inspector General (OIG) that the use of panels or profiles may result in medically unnecessary testing.  Physicians who order medically unnecesary tests may be subject to criminal and civil penalties.
